We are a group of community members who believe community safety begins with protecting our most marginalized neighbors, and that over-policing is not the solution. We provide safety teams for community events and train folks in bystander intervention and de-escalation techniques.
BACKGROUND:
We have been doing this work in our community since 2020, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police. Originally a project of SURJ Lafayette and Younger Women's Task Force of Greater Lafayette, it is now a separate initiative that contains members from many different community organizations. We are not experts, but we are committed to learning from each other, following the leadership of marginalized folks, and taking feedback with humility.
Get Involved:
Anyone can learn basic de-escalation techniques and tools for keeping our community safe. Join our mailing list below to receive information on upcoming trainings or other events. If you represent an organization that would like a violence intervention team at your event or would like to plan a training for your group, email us at VITLafayette@proton.me.
